A Brief History of I Love You Because
In December of 2010, I was finishing a run as Ebenezer Scrooge in the play Trial of Ebenezer Scrooge directed by Tom Kline and produced by the Moonlight Players.
One night, after a performance, most of the cast went to the pub across the street. It was the usual post-show cast hangout due to its location and because it was the only place in town open late at night.
I was crammed into a booth in back with Tom and a few others. Tom began telling us about his plans to make a feature film out of his play 9 Months, which he had directed several years before. During the discussion, Tom said that he'd like for me to play the lead in the film. I had a lot of respect for Tom as a director from my experience on Trial of Ebenezer Scrooge and would have taken any role if it meant working with Tom again.
And thus began our long and arduous journey with I Love You Because.
I was crammed into a booth in back with Tom and a few others. Tom began telling us about his plans to make a feature film out of his play 9 Months, which he had directed several years before. During the discussion, Tom said that he'd like for me to play the lead in the film. I had a lot of respect for Tom as a director from my experience on Trial of Ebenezer Scrooge and would have taken any role if it meant working with Tom again.
And thus began our long and arduous journey with I Love You Because.
Tom's film went into production early the next year; but, as often happens with low-budget films, the production shut down after only three days of filming. I had put a considerable amount of time into the film, and did not want that time to be wasted, so I asked Tom if he would be willing to let us take over the production. He resoundingly agreed.
Jason and I planned to start our production with a clean slate. We would have a completely new production team (me and Jason), new crew (mostly Jason) and a new cast, with the exception of myself. I would remain the male lead in our version of the film because I had already done the character work, and out of convenience.
Our first step was to adapt the play script into a film, adding a depth that was not possible due to the restrictions of the stage and putting our unique stamp on the script. We combined a few characters, and added several of our own; such as Sean, Paddy and Ian, who are original to our version of the film.
My character, Kevin, needed friends, and we figured why not write the roles for my friends who are also aspiring actors. There would be a real life basis for the relationship of the characters in the film, and we'd be helping them out by writing roles specifically for them, which would show off their acting talents. We never considered casting anyone else for the roles, and were delighted when all three actors accepted the roles when we offered it to them.
We also added a few other roles for actors like Brendon Rogers and Debbie Sussman, who we have worked with on other projects and wanted to work with again,
In 2013 we locked the script for production and began the audition process.

Thank You!
One of the biggest frustrations involved with producing an
independent film is money: specifically, a lack of money. Since we
first discovered we would have the opportunity to adapt Tom Kline's
play and produce it as a film, there was a certain item Jason and I
knew we would need to ensure that the film could hold its own as a
professionally produced film in a highly competitive market. This
item usually costs from a few thousand dollars to $10,000 or more, so
there was no way we would be able to afford it and would just have to
do the best we could without it. Then in mid December, we found this
item selling significantly cheaper than we had seen before. We're
talking a few hundred dollars; and it looked just as good as the ones
selling for $10,000. Now, however, we were faced with another
dilemma: where would we get the money to pay for it. Jason and I
still have props, set supplies and costumes to purchase for the film. But just when the standard
low budget film producers' disappointment set in, two different
friends gave us money for Christmas and told us to put it towards I
Love You Because. Their combined gifts were just enough to cover the
cost of this particular item.
So, we are sending out a big thank you to these friends, and our sincere gratitude. Your support has enriched the production value of I Love You Because, and it will be a better film for it.

I Love You Because Production Day 2
In the play 9 Months, which I Love You Because is based on, there
is a lot of talk about birthing videos, and in researching the film,
I watched a lot of birthing videos on YouTube, which led to the
writing of a scene in the film in which Sean (Travis Johnson) shows
Kevin (me) Paddy (Leon Jones) and Ian (Kenny Forthun) his wife Amy's
(Frances Rodriguez) birthing video. But, before we could film that
scene, we had to film footage for the birthing video, so today, we
had Travis and Frances out to our offices to film.
Since the birthing video is only seen on a tv, and will only take up a few seconds of screen time, we knew we would not be filming it in an actual hospital. This is where writing our own films comes in handy, because even at the writing stage, we had it planned out how the scene would be shot, and didn't have to wait until pre-production to figure out how to shoot the scene. We simply designed the scene in the script so that all the dialogue would be filmed in close ups, with the camera held by Travis, with instructions to turn the camera back and forth between their lines so that the camera is on him for his dialogue, and on Frances for her dialogue. Because of this, we were able to get around filming in a hospital, because not enough of the room will be seen in the frame for anyone to be able to tell where the birthing video was filmed. In place of using an hospital room to film the scene, we just waited to paint the bedroom of our apartment set (the original color is white) until after filming the birthing video, and-except for anyone who reads this blog post-no one will know the difference. By doing this, we were not only able to save a lot of time, money and hassle, but were also able to get two sets out of one.
